Why has this arisen?
The Office of the Public Guardian has found it has been able to process applications more efficiently than they expected due to increased volumes of applications and greater efficiencies in processing. As government agencies are not allowed to charge a fee above the costs of processing the application without specific authority this means that many people are due a refund.
What do I have to do to claim my refund?
If you registered your own power of attorney or if you have registered a power of attorney under which you are appointed as an attorney between 1 April 2013 and 31 March 2017 then you are able to claim a refund.
The amount of the refund depends upon when you registered the power of attorney and ranges from £34 to £54 plus interest at 0.5%. If you paid a reduced fee then the refund is halved.
