A Lasting Power of Attorney allows you to choose someone, known as your attorney, to make decisions on your behalf. Once registered, this can allow your attorney to make decisions on your behalf immediately or at a time when you can no longer make decisions for yourself. The majority of lasting powers completed relate to property and financial affairs. These authorise an attorney to operate bank accounts, manage investments and buy and sell property on your behalf. It is also possible to appoint attorneys to make decisions regarding health and welfare matters. This may cover medical treatment that you would, or conversely may not wish to receive, in such circumstances that you may specify and also whether you continue to live in your own home or move into residential care.
AMD can advise you on the appointment of appropriate attorneys and assist with the preparation of a Lasting Power of Attorney tailored to meet your particular requirements.
